About 9 Miles Project
9Miles Project is a registered non-profit organisation that was founded in Cape Town in 2013. The project works with youth in coastal informal settlements and aims to provide mentorship and support to the at-risk youth in the areas of Cape Town, Elands Bay, and St Francis Bay. The project is a haven and refuge for youth who have very few positive role models in their lives.
Through the provision of supplementary education, literacy classes, learning adventures, life skills and leadership training, including sports (namely surfing) 9Miles Project creates sustainable opportunities that engage, uplift, equip and empower impoverished and high risk youth from coastal informal settlements and communities.
Our Campaign
In conjunction with the 9 Miles team we planned a fundraising campaign called: The Springboard Project. The goal? To raise enough money for the 9 Miles Project to buy a mini-bus that will allow them to include more at-risk youth in their mentorship and leadership training program. And take more kids surfing.Through the support Wavescape and the surfing community we were able to raise R200 000 towards their van.
Three of the four wooden boards were auctioned, sold and raffled in a mammoth effort to raise money for the 9 Miles Project’s mini-bus.
- One of the boards was auctioned at Wave Scape Art Board Auction
- One was given away as a prize in a raffle competition
- The third one was sold
Thanks to the unbelievable generosity and support of this community, we were able to raise more than R170,000 for the 9 Miles Project.
Our expectations have been exceeded and this project is an incredible testimony of just how remarkable this surfing and outdoor community is.
